IANAM, but I do not believe that monsoon is the correct term for this storm. I think hurricane or cyclone would be appropriate, or perhaps typhoon if it were over the Pacific. But monsoon refers to a specific weather pattern that — in the US — is found in the Southwest– not on the East Coast. I don’t think hurricanes are caused by the monsoon season. I’d be interested to learn if I’m mistaken.
I think you’re correct. I used the term because I remember the monsoon season in India, where I lived as a young child, and the kinds of rains we’ve been having the past few summers remind me of that.
