Yes.

This touches on a much larger issue that I need to circle back to at some point: cloud-based application settings.

Among other outcomes of Live Mesh, I’m hoping it will accelerate the decoupling of app settings from local installations so that these scenarios become not only possible but routine.

It occurs to me there might be another possible route to locally recorded audio. Paul Figgiani can back me up on this. There is such a wealth of ‘settings’ in any audio program loaded onto a PC much less on any random audio recorder that a checklist of settings is an absolute necessity. But better than a checklist would be something akin to a ‘config’ file or preferences file that could be ‘sucked in’ to say any local recording software or pulled into a hand held recorder. That’s asking a lot, but that would divorce the need for expert knowledge for the person recording locally. They wouldn’t have to check every setting themselves (possibly including the audio level of the recording? just a thought).

Isn’t it amazing how close you got to nailing it? Man oh man, but that slight difference in codecs and sample rates is just enough to ruin it. In your FAQ for Interviewees maybe some recommendations for the file format, bit rate and sample rate might also help alleviate mismatches. It’s amazing how many local tracks you’ve gotten haven’t worked but there’s always the next interview. One of these days it will work.
